Why am I here?
What happens when I die'
What is a life well lived?
Is Gillette really the best a man can get?
and my most frequently asked question-Where have I put my car keys?
The beauty of these questions is that nobody has discovered the answer. Not even ChatGBT. Socrates recognised the only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing. Still, it's a hell of a journey having a go.
I have spent most of my life curating a bunch of ideas, discoveries and insights from great philosophers, scientists, musicians, sportspeople and authors that have resonated deeply to me over the past fifty years.
Idiots aren’t thick, they just don't have to be right all the time.
Idiots feel free to ask the dumb questions that everyone else is too embarrassed to ask.Why would an idiot treat other people any different when they don’t take themselves too seriously?
Idiots recognise that knowing a little bit about something is better than not knowing anything at all.Idiots aren't restricted to being linear, they take delight in being illogical. Yet Idiots can be capable of insightful meaning
I am a brand and communications brain with extensive experience. I've appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe and have done stand up gigs ...at funerals. I'm a member of Toastmasters UK. What makes a book glow in a bookstore? What made me pick up and read Ernest Beckers’ The Denial of Death en route to New York on Sep.11 2001? During my business career I spent hours and hours on long haul flights reading books that just seemed to shine at me from the shelves of airport bookstores. I had started my very own mile high book club.
I’d been looking for answers to the big questions in life and An Idiot Soul is a semi-autobiographical collection of the thoughts and ideas of this fairly ordinary bloke who’s just trying to get his head around the meaning of life, the universe and where he’s left his keys.
I’m a self confessed intellectual magpie who has curated a bunch of ideas, discoveries and insights from the great philosophers, scientists, musicians, sportspeople and authors that have resonated the most deeply to me over the past fifty years.A few years ago I started to collate all the notes and mind maps I’d taken from the books I’ve read and absorbed.
I had been on a comedy writing course and after I discovered (painfully) that stand up wasn’t really for me, I had the idea of adopting a comedic writing style to help me address the big philisophical, spiritual and personal development questions I’d been asking myself.
One sleepless night when my mind was doing 150 mph, I had the thought of ‘An Idiot Soul” and immeadiately created its domain name, Instagram, Twitter and Tic Tok profiles.I then started to mind map out the structure of the book first in overview, then into core themes and then into specific chapters.
A jigsaw of thoughts from an ordinary bloke trying to get his head around the meaning of life, purpose and where he’s left his car keys. A valiant attempt to answer those big ‘why am I here’ type questions knowing full well that there’s no truly satisfying answer.
The book is a product of a sixty year epiphany inspired by a hit single from the 1970’s by a bunch of teddy boys dressed from the 1950’s. A personal and spiritual adventure that connects the lessons from religious, scientific, philosophical and sporting insights with personal experiences of heartache, life threatening illness and magical moments of undiluted joy..
This quest for truth covers topics from stoicism to string theory, gravity to gratitude, the death of true meaning and the true meaning of death. It chronicles the connections between David Bowie and Sir Issac Newton, between Carl Jung, rapper Kae Tempest and an airport bookshop, it illustrates how the stories of elite althletes and sports people are the true guides to finding the very best in ourselves and discovers that the genius of Leonardo Da Vinci is best illustrated via a pizza menu.
It reflects on the notion of a higher self, a deeper appreciation of love and a world of widening wealth inequality. It is indeed, a tall story.
